EXPERIENCE
Gateway Gas Storage Project, Cumbria
On behalf of Stag Energy, DWD provided planning support to the Gateway Gas Storage Project near Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The project encompassed the creation of 20 offshore caverns in salt strata beneath the East Irish Sea for the storage of natural gas. The caverns would be linked to new onshore gas processing equipment adjacent to Centrica’s South Morecambe Gas Terminal by circa 25 kilometre (km) pipelines sub-sea and onshore pipelines.
DWD secured planning permission in 2008 for the onshore elements of the project, including the circa 5 km pipelines landfall across Walney Island and the Piel Channel, both areas of nature conservation interest with the latter being a navigable waterway serving the docks at Barrow-in-Furness. DWD was responsible for leading the discussions with key consultees such as Natural England. An application to extend the life of the 2008 planning permission was subsequently approved.
