King’s Lynn ‘B’ CCGT Power Station, Norfolk
DWD has acted as lead consultant to EP UK Investments on the variation of the Section 36 consent for the King’s Lynn ‘B’ combined cycle gas turbine (‘CCGT’) Power Station Project in Norfolk.
Consent was granted under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 in 2009 for a 1,020-megawatt (MW) CCGT power station at the site. Due to advances in CCGT technology, which has meant CCGT units are now able to achieve greater electrical outputs, and the need to make changes to the consented plant configuration, EP UK Investments is now proposing to construct and operate a power station of up to 1,700 MW at the site, including the option of a gas-fired peaking plant of up to 299 MW. The increase in generating capacity requires the provision of additional land for carbon capture plant so that the Power Station is ‘Carbon Capture ready’.
DWD submitted a Section 36C variation application in early April 2018 following pre-application consultation. The variation consent for a power station of up to 1,700 MW, including the option of a peaking plant of up to 299 MW, was granted 8 months later on 6 December 2018 by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
