Letchworth Embedded Power Plant, Bedfordshire

Infrastructure & Energy

North Hertfordshire District Council

DWD successfully advised Green Frog Power Ltd in securing planning permission for a 20 megawatt embedded power plant within the Green Belt on the edge of Letchworth Garden City.

The power plant is now operational and is connected to the local electricity network via an existing electricity substation and generates electricity through the operation of a number of gas fuelled generators. The plant provides ‘stand by’ or ‘back up’ electricity generating capacity through a capacity market contract with National Grid to deal with periods of unexpected demand or stress on the electricity transmission network.

The local planning authority questioned whether Green Frog had demonstrated the ‘very special circumstances’ to justify a Green Belt location. DWD prepared a Green Belt Special Circumstances Report , which demonstrated to the local planning authority s satisfaction that a Green Belt location was justified.
